What is the Pipe Fittings？

Piping or plumbing is the occupation of installing or repairing systems of pipes or fittings that convey liquids, gases, and occasionally solid materials. and connects to the end of the pipe so that it can change direction, control flow, and change the diameter of the pipe.

The variety of pipe fittings can be as confusing as choosing the right screws or nails for a construction project. The materials vary, and the specific uses, while precise, can seem daunting. The following is a brief overview of what pipe fittings are used for and the materials offered.

Elbow. Used to change the angle or direction at which a pipe runs. The most common are 90- and 45-degree turns. The sweep of the fitting describes the speed at which the transition or change of direction is made.

Street Elbow. A fitting that has a male thread on one end and a female thread on the other. These are common in galvanized steel and copper pipe. They are convenient because they don't require nipples and they work well in tight places.

Tee Fittings. Shaped like the letter T to allow for branching lines.

Splice. Used to connect two straight pieces of tubing of the same diameter.

Reducer: Used to connect pipes of different diameters. Used to connect pipes of different diameters. Makes the diameter change gradually.

Bushing: Used to make the diameter of a pipe fitting smaller. Used to make the diameter of a fitting smaller. They are different from reducers because they make a sudden change in diameter and take up less space.

Unions. Used to connect tubing that cannot be rotated, or that must be removed for maintenance or equipment replacement.

Adapter. Used to change the end of a non-threaded pipe to a male or female thread, as needed. Most commonly used for work with copper and plastic pipe.

Pipe Cap. Used to seal the end of a dead-end pipe.

Plug: Used to seal the end of a dead-end pipe. Used to close the end of a fitting that is normally used for inspection or cleaning.

Nipples: Used to close the end of a fitting that is normally used for inspection or cleaning. A short length of pipe that has threads on both ends.

Wrench: Primarily used to gain access to the inside of a pipe. Primarily used to gain access to the inside of DWV (drain-waste-ventilator) systems.

Valve: A device that controls the flow of liquid. A device that controls the flow of liquid or gas through or out of a pipe. (Compression valves, ball valves, sleeve valves, ceramic disc valves, etc.).

PVC Fittings. Available in a variety of configurations, either glued (S) or threaded (T).

Copper Fittings. Use compression fittings. Common fittings are fittings, elbows, and tees.
