Your Position: Home - Machinery - Tornado Milling, the Magic Tool for Thread Processing
Performing non-turning processing on lathes was a last resort due to factors such as lack of equipment. However, during this process, smart working people discovered that the modified machine tools could complete a lot of efficient and high-quality processing.
Among the milling processes performed on lathes, whirling thread milling is one of them. Today we will learn about cyclone milling.
Because of its high milling speed (speed up to 400m/min), high processing efficiency, and the use of compressed air for chip removal and cooling. It is named after the cutting splash like a whirlwind during the machining process.
Tornado thread milling is a method in which a whirlwind milling head is used to process threads, and the thread can be processed in just one cut.
01Determine the shape of the part
02Determine the tool shape according to the part
03 Make the corresponding blade
There are several companies that specialize in the production of thread milling blades, such as Kamex, NTK, Hoen and the domestic Fengyi. Fengyi cutting tools are professional blades commonly used in domestic cyclone milling special equipment.
04Install the blade onto the cutterhead
After the cyclone milling is matched with the lathe, five processing movements need to be completed during the processing:
The cutter head drives the carbide forming knife to rotate at high speed (main motion)
The lathe spindle drives the workpiece to rotate slowly (auxiliary motion)
Suggested reading:Whirlwind milling moves along the axial direction of the workpiece (feed movement) according to the pitch or lead of the workpiece
The cyclone milling machine performs radial movement (cutting movement) driven by the carriage in the lathe.
Whirlwind milling also has the freedom to adjust the helix angle within a certain angle range (rotary movement)
1. It consists of cyclone milling cutter head, workpiece and guide sleeve.
2. Adjust the installation deflection angle according to the helix angle ϕ of the thread.
The installation declination angle determines the size of the thread pitch, and a large installation declination angle processes large pitch threads.
3. Down milling
The rotation direction of the cyclone milling cutter is opposite to the rotation direction of the machine tool spindle (part), which is down milling, so that good surface quality can be processed. On the contrary, it is reverse milling, and the processed surface quality is poor.
Advantages of whirling thread cutting:
1. High processing efficiency, higher than traditional turning processing efficiency! The maximum can reach more than 10 times.
2. The product is formed with one cutter, and no tool retraction is required for eccentric cutting.
3. The structure of the lathe is not changed, the helix angle is adjustable, and the installation is easy.
4. The surface roughness can reach Ra0.8 micron or even higher, and the processing accuracy can be improved by 2 levels.
5. The programming method is simple and fast, and the forming blade, blade and blade groove positioning accuracy is high, which reduces the technical requirements of workers.
Whirlwind milling can achieve dry cutting, heavy-duty cutting, difficult-to-machine materials and ultra-high-speed cutting, and consumes little power. The surface roughness can reach Ra0.8μm. The lathe spindle rotates slowly, so the machine tool has high motion precision and good dynamic stability. It is an advanced thread processing method.
